Summer in a vase, in February

Zinnia flowers in a vase from plants grown under LED lighting

It’s been a very mild winter across most of the country, but not exactly warm enough to pick a vase of flowers. Fourteen weeks ago in my basement I planted the seeds that made the flowers you see above. I wouldn’t exactly call it a bounty of buds, but it sure did make me happy to have summer flowers in February! Each plant produced one large bloom that was open for several weeks. The plants sent up additional buds, but they were about half the size of the first ones. If you are looking to grow your own flowers expect that it will take about 3 months to get them to start blooming.
