Trying out new LED lights

Zinnias growing under LED lighting

The test zinnias started to bloom and stretch out as they grew. Getting the entire plant enough light was a challenge. Below you can see how the blooms were starting to grow between and under the lights. Once a bloom starts to grow it can shoot up really quickly, and get wedged under the lights.

Zinnias growing under LED shop lights

As the plants get taller the bottom leaves get further and further away from the lights. This means that only the top part of the plant is receiving the full amount of light, while the bottom half gets hardly any useable light. These LED shop lights are really great for seedlings and small plant starts as they can be kept close to the plants and give them plenty of light. Since I’m trying to get the plants to bloom so I can breed them I wanted more light and more room for them to stretch out. I decided on trying out the Spider Farmer SF1000 because of the amount of light that it puts out and that it doesn’t need to be as close to the plants. So far it’s been great, but in the coming months the plants will let me know for sure.
